The name Orchid comes from the Greek ORKHIS which means testicle because of the shape of the root. In 1845 the orchid was introduced by John Lindley at the School of Botany. The Greek myth of Orchis explains the origins of the plants. According to this myth Orchis who was the son of a satyr and a nymph came upon the festival of Dionysus in the forest, where he had too much to drink and tried to rape one of the priestess’s of Dionysus. His punishment was to be torn apart, and while his father prayed for him to be restored the Gods instead changed him into a flower.
